M/S "Søkongen" was build in the
year 1970 for the former
KGH (Royal Greenlandic Tradedepartment). The wessel is build of oak on oak
and
specially heavy built for Greenland. She is both seaworthy and suitable
for sailing in icefilled waters. From 1976, when Weyhe and Myrup bought the ship,
major updates has been made concerning hull, machinery, electronic equipment,
accommodation, loading/unloading equipment and so on.
M/S "Søkongen" is under survey of The Danish Maritime Authority, Søfartsstyrelsen, and fulfills all requirements concerning safety and rescue equipment for transportation of passengers. The wessel is certified and has valid trade permit for up to 12 passengers on the Westcoast of Greenland from Siorapaluk in the north to Lindenows Fjord in Southeast Greenland . The Danish Maritime Authority´s rules for wessels in trade as the "Søkongen", can be read here (only in danish, sorry). The disposition of the wessel is as follows: Fore are found, under deck, 2 single chambers and a chamber with 2 bunks for passengers. Toilet and stores under the forecastle. Amidship is cargo hold and deck. Aft a big salon with TV and Video, kabys, 3 chambers with 2 bunks each for passengers, accomodation for the crew, 2 toilets and shower besides the brigde with skipper´s office. The bridge is equipped with all necessary modern navigational equipment such as radar, echosounder, VHF, MF and HF radio, Autopilot, Gps, electronical seamaps, plotting system a.s.o. The most importent instruments are installed in double. M/S "Søkongen" is a very reliabel wessel. Through the passed years, no engagements have, so far, been cancelled or delayed due to tecnical problems. The Passengers can choose either to cook their own meals onboard (supplies must be brought along) or meals can be arranged by the crew by appointment . One meal is served free of charge on the day of boarding. Coffee and tee are provided for free. M/S "Søkongen" is sized to call at almost any populated place in Greenland and is well suited also as a base wessel for ekspeditions, either for leisure or more "serious" purposes.
